| The Black Gnat dry fly is tied to represent a terrestrial insect rather than one of aquatic origin. There are several different species of black gnat and all are taken prolifically by trout year round. It is best used in Spring and early Summer. | The Hawthorn Fly is a terrestrial pattern similar to the Black Gnat. It can be deadly in April and May when the species is most common. It is best fished when it is warm and there is a slight breeze to blow the fly on to the water. Humid conditions also favour the insect. | The Para Adams is a generic river/lake olive dun pattern but is suitably non-descript to represent lighter coloured terrestrial flies. It can be used all year round. |
