Terrestrial Dry Flies
The most commonly used terrestrial flies are the Hawthorn Fly and Black Gnat.  The Bibio is also widely used on rivers and lakes near moors and heathland.

Black Gnat
Sizes 14-20
The Black Gnat dry fly is tied to represent a terrestrial insect rather than one of aquatic origin.  There are several different species of black gnat and all are taken prolifically by trout year round.  It is best used in Spring and early Summer.

Hawthorn Fly
Size 12 only
The Hawthorn Fly is a terrestrial pattern similar to the Black Gnat.  It can be deadly in April and May when the species is most common.  It is best fished when it is warm and there is a slight breeze to blow the fly on to the water.  Humid conditions also favour the insect.
