Midge and Chironomid Dry Flies
Midge and chironomid flies are sometimes called buzzers due to the buzzing noise large swarms can make.  When midges swarm on lakes trout will rarely take anything else.  There are river species of midge but they are too small to be of interest to fly fishermen.

The adult midges are large and colourful and can be seen mainly on warm summer evenings.

Bob's Bits
Sizes 10-14
Bob's Bits is tied to represent a chironomid.  These are only found in significant numbers on lakes.  They vary greatly in colour and are sometimes called buzzers or midges (duckfly in Ireland).  Bob's Bits is best fished on summer evenings when the wind is calm.

Claret Emerger
Sizes 10-14
The Claret Emerger is an adult chironomid pattern designed for use on lakes in the spring and summer.  Buzzer or midge fishing can be very exciting as the fish can really hit the fly hard.  Stealth and quick reactions are essential but watch for fish not actually taking the fly.

Red Tailed Midge
Sizes 10-12
The Red Tailed Midge is an adult chironomid pattern designed primarily for summer lake use.  This is a highly effective pattern when fished at the right time.  The red tail is distinctive and it is worth checking that the midges dancing around the lake include species with red tails.
